Censorship was introduced as a way to keep Canada's secrets, a secret. During the war, the government was afraid that information would slip out threatening the citizen's views on the war effort. The German spies in Ottawa, Japanese bombs floating over the prairies, and the U-boats attacking at the St.Lawrence River were all kept a secret from the citizens. They were also afraid that this information might land in the enemies hands. The Canadian armed forces censored all letters going to and from the soldiers, and the government censored the media (newspapers, radio broadcasts, and movies). Nothing was seen by the public until it was approved by the censorship board.
